Crossing Alaska
Published in Hardcover by Graphic Arts Center Publishing Co. (June, 1997)
Average review score:

Crossing Alaska through PhotographsCrossing Alaska is a "large size" book containing a combination of fantastic color photographs and information about America's last great wilderness adventure: Alaska.
The author, situated in Alaska, during the construction of the Alaska Pipeline, has captured the great beauty and size of Alaska in wonderful color photographs. You'll see the bears, caribou and the playful sea otters.
Her descriptions of the country and the breathtaking landscapes meld perfectly with the full page color photographs. This book is found in many of the hotels in Alaska and near the Denali National Forest as a "come on" to get you to go out and really see the back country; it is well worth it.

The Cruise of the Gipsy: The Journal of John Wilson, Surgeon on a Whaling Voyage to the Pacific Ocean, 1839-1843
Published in Hardcover by Ye Galleon Pr (July, 1991)
Average review score:

Like finding an old dusty diary in an ancient sea trunk...I found this book to be a facinating treasure of information from ships which sailed over 150 years ago to observations of island natives, all reflected in the actual words of this "Journal". Daily entries of locations, temperatures longitude, lattitude, wind, observations, personal notations and more make this a great addition to any collection. A few errors in the illustration's pagination noted in an errata do not detract from the quality of this book. Great evening reading for lovers of sailing, history or first-hand accounts/diaries. I like this very much and highly recommend it.

Average review score:

Review by former Navy ship CaptainI feel this book is a terrific reference for those who have ever considered plying the waters around San Diego. It's interesting reading as well as very informative. I especially liked the references to often hard-to-find phone numbers. I wish I had this book on my ship when I was in command!

Cuisines of Southeast Asia: Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Burmese & More (California Culinary Academy)
Published in Paperback by California Culinary Academy (February, 1994)
Average review score:

Great Book! The recipes in this book are very well written and easy to follow. There is a section describing unfamiliar ingredients, and the lesser know cuisines of Southeast Asia such as Burmese and Cambodian have some very good representative dishes. Just about every recipe is usable, and there are some very exotic specialties such as Burmese tea leaf salad. The photography is excellent. I'd highly recommend this book.

Culture Shock!: California
Published in Paperback by Graphic Arts Center Publishing Co. (September, 1997)
Average review score:

A definitive, whimsical, and informed look into California.Unlike average travel guides that list tourist traps in a droning disinterested voice, the author imbues California with life using a charming, very witty writing style. Simply put, he brings California to life for the reader. The guide he provides is unique and thoroughly enjoyable. The photographs selected are great in capturing the beauty of the state. I would recommend this book for anyone looking to explore California or just intersted in travelling through the written word.

Curbside L.A.: An Offbeat Guide to the City of Angels from the Pages of the Los Angeles Times
Published in Paperback by Los Angeles Times (October, 1996)
Average review score:

Curbside LAI...specialize in education and entertainment about death ingeneral as well as Hollywood. I throughly enjoyed this book. I use itas a reference guide that I keep in my car. I often entertain my guests by giving them tours of Hollywood's and Los Angeles' famous death spots. I like the facts about some of the lesser known people who made hollywood, but are often ignored. This is the strong point of this book and I rely on it. Most other Hollywood death books rehash the same material over and over.

The Curve of Time: The Classic Memoir of a Woman and Her Children Who Explored the Coastal Waters of the Pacific Northwest (Adventura Travel Series)
Published in Paperback by Seal Press (April, 2002)
Average review score:

A simple, but simply delightful collection of storiesA thoroughly readable account of summers spent in a simpler time. Muriel Wylie Blanchet's accounts of many consecutive summers spent sailing north from Victoria into the wild, sparesely populated islands and coastal communities of British Columbia is a delightful read.
She prevailed as a mariner, amateur mechanic, and raconteur at an age and at a point in history when merely being a widow and mother of 5 young children would have been daunting enough.
You can feel the anticipation of her young family as they embark each year to see new places and meet new friends. As they grow, so does the reader's appreciation for the isolation, raw physical beauty, and many charms of Canada's west coast.
I have referred many friends to this book, and all have become devotees. You do not need to have ever been to the west coast, or even to have been on a boat, to appreciate this delightful tale.
